Why Tax Day was Shifted to April 18th

March 22, 2017

Did you know that Tax Day in 2017 is actually April 18th and not April 15th? In the final few days and weeks leading up the inevitable tax day, we are still awarded some comfort that we have just those few extra days to file our taxes! It’s all really great news, but do you know why Tax Day was shifted to April 18th?

Why tax day was shifted to April 18th

Tax Day must be a Weekday

Taxes can only be filed when the IRS tax offices are open, and during the weekend they are not. This year, April 15th (Normal date of Tax Day) falls on a Saturday so it is going to be moved to the following Monday. This would make 2017’s Tax Day be on April 17th, but it’s not, there’s more.

Emancipation Day

Washington D.C. celebrates Emancipation Day which is when slavery ended in Washington DC. Because this is a legal holiday, the IRS offices will be closed in DC, which means there would be no way to file taxes. Emancipation Day is typically held on April 16th, but if it falls on a weekend it is observed on the closest week day. So, if April 16th is on a Saturday, it is celebrated on the Friday before, if the Holiday falls on a Sunday it is celebrated that coming Monday. Well this year’s Emancipation Day falls on a Sunday and will be observed on Monday the 17th.

This puts this year’s Tax Day on Tuesday, April 18th, 2017

This isn’t the First Time

Do you remember when this same situation occurred last year? Emancipation Day was moved back to Friday April 15th, 2016 which caused Tax Day to be moved to the following Monday, April 18th, 2016. In fact, those Americans who lived in Maine or Massachusetts received another day last year because April 18th is Patriot’s Day, a state holiday, and Tax Day was moved again to Tuesday, April 19th, 2016.

When to File Taxes in 2017

Even though Tax Day has been moved back a couple days, you still want to file your taxes a bit earlier to avoid any unforeseen issues. Not to mention, the earlier you file your taxes, the sooner you can have your tax return back!
